What is Chiropractic?

 Brief History of Chiropractic:

@

The first adjustment is performed by Dr. D. D. Palmer in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa. The first patient, Mr. Lillard, complaints about hearing problem for over 17 years. Dr. Palmer exam Mr. Lillard's spine and discovered the spine was out of place that might caused irritation of nerve for hearing. When Dr. Palmer adjust that out align segment with a gentle force to push the spine back to the position. After several treatments, Mr. Lillard's hearing was restore.

100 years after Dr. Palmer discovered chiropractic technique, the field of chiropractic has been advanced significantly. Today's chiropractic care is given by various diagnostic methods to determine patients' problems, given non-invasive care such as physical therapies, soft tissue massage and chiropractic adjustment to help patients to ease the pain.

Understanding Chiropractic care:

The purpose of care is to restore and maintain the health of the whole body and not just treat isolated symptoms or diseases. Chiropractic care is aimed at restoring and maintaining normal structure that will enhance the health of joints, muscles, and nervous functions. Function means the ability to perform daily living activities that includes range of motion, flexibility, stability, strength and coordination.

So, what's the "function" to do with my pain??

A: Failure to restore function means any pain relief is temporary and increases the risk of chronic pain. Joint that have good function are not painful, perform better and are less likely to be re-injured and/or degenerated. Decreased function can be due to injury and pain.  A resulted mal-functioning nervous system can have impact to our autonomic system that may lead to dysfunction of our organ(s) in the long run.  Chiropractic helps minimize pain and maximize function by the use of adjustments, soft tissue massage, exercise, physical therapy and many other methods.

So, what's adjustment? why adjustment is performed?

A: Chiropractic adjustment is a controlled force to overcome the restrict (stuck) joints that the body is unable to overcome itself. Such "restriction" include muscle spasm, swelling, scar tissue and pain. When spine is out of alignment, the nerves are compromised and the body is likely to experience pain and affect the quality of life. Adjustments specifically applied to joints can restore motion when the body's own muscle cannot. After adjustments are performed, the joints will be align to its optimal position. Through the adjustment to remove the restriction (subluxations), chiropractic provides for safe, natural, affordable, and effective relief from many acute and chronic problems.
